Photo by Dan Clery     Janet Kuypers was one of a number of performers in Chicago Calling at Mercury Cafe, 1505 W. Chicago Ave., Chicago, IL 60642-5237, phone (312) 455-9922 (the last night of the coffee shop’s existence, since it was scheduled to close October 3rd!). The Chicago Calling Arts Festival event includes performances by Chicago-based artists, in collaboration with artists who live outside of Chicago. Performers are performing work that is done collaboratively, so Kuypers, in her 15 minute performance, read poetry set to music done with artists from Tennessee, New Mexico, England and South Africa. Some poets have collaborated with others in writing, or with painters, but Kuypers is performing poetry that was set to music by the DMJ Art Connection (with musicians David Michael Jackson, Andy Derryberry and Harold Skelton from Tennessee), with music from the HA!man of South Africa... And Kuypers is sure to include Tribal Scream (with music from Mark Clayton Graham of New Mexico), Tired of Life (with music from the U.K. film by Jez Fry, with sampled and altered music from “Opalin” by Aes Dana), and Taking Out the Brain (with music done by Elektronarkoz, after they heard my reading the poem on the radio, and no, we have no idea where they are from).
