Sexism and Other Stories, 11/6/10 Lake Villa feature

On November 6^th 2010, Janet Kuypers performed a show of pieces focusing on sexism. Since she worked as an acquaintance rape workshop facilitator and ad designed for years in the past, Kuypers heard many stories about rape, and learned about the many ways women are treated differently in society. This is the first time (and possibly only time) Kuypers will collect women’s issues poems together in one large show like this...

Janet Kuypers was asked in September by Moira Phippen (the “Visual Nonsense” Co-ordinator) to create a show performance for this Swing State event. The show “'Visual Nonsense”' is an art festival focusing on anything and everything with a visual edge. They can focus on films, but this collective also welcome live music acts, comedy, dance, poetry - as long as something visual is going on too, be it live painting, props, playing some footage on the projector, slide shows, etc. during the show

Although her live music was unable to be performed in this show, previous recordings of both electric guitars and keyboards were used with her poetry about sexism and women’s issues. Kuypers also had video with a male actor (C Ra McGuirt of Penny Dreadful Press) as well in this live show.

Original plans were for the show to end with an original blues song from Janet Kuypers and John (“Tight Rope Affair”), but because of music constraints, Kuypers added additional poems to her show (adding to the theme of the title as “Sexism and other stories”) pertaining to work and employment, to the 2010 Census, and to the concepts of both death and love/attraction.

    This poetry show had music from assorted instruments (and even live harmonica with a metronome playing in one of her pieces). Because it was performed in “Visual Nonsense”, not only did videos accompany the entire performance on the main screen, but there were also two small screens of randomly generated images being displayed throughout the show, but Kuypers was also filmed and shown on a larger television. in an added post-show note from Janet Kuypers:
    “After I performed this show, a gentleman told me he really enjoyed the show, and that it made him think. I told him I was a little worried how men would perceive all of these poems, and if they would easily be turned off. He told me that initially he was, but them he asked himself why these poems made him react this way. Then he considered how he called women nicknames (as one of the poems mentions), and wondered if subconsciously people were raised to think certain ways toward women. Then he reiterated that this show really made him think.
    I thanked him profusely, and told him that my goal is to make people think.
    Others came to thank me and tell me this was a very moving show, and that it really made people think. It’s good to hear, because that means I’m doing my job well.”
