KERRY BLASTED FOR REMARKS ON GOOD MORNING AMERICA

NEWPORT BEACH, CALIFORNIA - Sen. John Kerry (D, Mass.,) a candidate for the 2004 Democratic presidential nomination, denounced people with money during a health care policy discussion on ABC's Good Morning America.

In Senator Kerry's world, citizens who take responsibility for their own health care-and put aside something to pay for it-are objects of contempt, Richard E. Ralston, executive director of Americans for Free Choice in Medicine (AFCM), observed in an op-ed released today.

Kerry made the comments on Feb. 25 after denouncing tax-free Health Savings Accounts (HSAs.) The Democratic frontrunner, who also said he favors more government health subsidies for the poor, has proposed government-controlled health care. Ralston said AFCM opposes socialized medicine on principle and favors free market ideas, such as HSAs and tax reform.

Paying medical expenses and insurance premiums can be a struggle. Medical emergencies or temporary unemployment can make this struggle even more challenging, Ralston wrote. But helping people do this by reducing the tax burden on health care savings can provide more real help than government handouts.

Ralston's articles have been published in the Houston Chronicle, Orange County Register and the Washington Times.

Americans for Free Choice in Medicine, (AFCM), founded in 1993, publishes a consumer's guide to free market reforms on its Web site and AFCM is the nation's only educational organization based on individual rights, personal responsibility and free market ideas in medicine.
