Our Own Monster

Armed with a concealed thought permit, I thought I would share a disturbing thought with the public. Recently, I received a sad notice that a friend of mine faced a county tax assessor liquidation sale of his property for his failure to pay property tax. This man is a decent family man, a hard worker, and an employer of many. A believer in the American Dream, he followed the rules, but somehow it was just not enough. Some will be quick to point fingers at him, saying that he was a poor manager or that he did not pull his weight. A friend of mine opined that it was the price of living in a free society. Free society! I say he succumbed to the weight of a great and terrible monster!
We have created a monster that slays its creators. It is the kind of monster that nurses on the hidden tax upon hospital beds. It is the kind of monster that, while after gorging itself with more taxes than it can consume, hides the excess for consumption after its next molt. It is the kind of monster that places an ever-present cage around us by holding our property hostage to periodic tribute. It is the same monster that, after it has killed you through servitude, sucks the marrow from your bones and tears the heart out of your survivors with death taxes. It is the same monster that makes Democrats run as Republicans and Republicans vote like Democrats. And, it is the monster that was enabled by them.
George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and Thomas Paine fought such a monster and won. We could too, if we had the courage to vote Libertarian.
