CAMPAIGN-FINANCE REFORMS ARE A FRAUD

July 13, 2001

MARINA DEL REY, CA--The campaign-finance "reforms," passed by the Senate and now under consideration in the House, are dangerous frauds, said a senior writer of the Ayn Rand Institute (ARI).

"These so-called reforms fail to confront the source of corruption in government," said Dr. Onkar Ghate, also a resident fellow at ARI, "and thus fraudulently perpetuate influence peddling."

Dr. Ghate identifies the fundamental source of corruption as the government's embrace of an arbitrary, non-objective standard--the "public interest." "Since the public interest is indefinable, it can be and is used to justify any choice or decision a government official makes," said Dr. Ghate. "In fact, this is the essence of lobbying-donating money to an official so that the giver can be granted the magical title of 'the public.' If stopping the selling of favors in Washington is the goal, why not stop the source of those favors, by eliminating the government's capacity to do whatever it wishes in the name of the public interest?"

"We should restore the system that was created precisely to eliminate arbitrary government power: the American system of inalienable individual rights, including property rights, said Dr. Ghate. "We should recognize that only an objectively limited government--limited by the standard of individual rights--has no arbitrary powers to exercise, and thus to sell." Ayn Rand Institute resident fellow Onkar Ghate is available for interviews on this topic.
