Unique Roads

Janet Kuypers

A cave in Patagonia houses the oldest known
pigment-based rock art in South America,
transmitting information across 100 generations 1...
But while in Argentina, I only drank Patagonia beer.
Well, and Quilmes, of course (named for the city)...
Now, you’d think that if you knew me, you’d think
I spent all my time researching Eva Perón —
and sure, I photographed her statue 2 — along with
a ton of other statues, and buildings, and foliage,
even street art, when I wasn’t reading poetry at their
Biblioteca Nacional Mariano Moreno, or getting lost
in Buenos Aires’ 600+ protected natural green spaces.

Then again, if you knew me, you’d probably think
I’d be spending my time drinking the beer there, and
knowing how I love my German hefeweizen beers
you might be right, because at night I’d flock to the bars
with German beers — there’s a surprising number there
because Argentine diplomats and intelligence officers had,
on Perón’s instructions, vigorously encouraged Nazi and
fascist war criminals to make their home in Argentina.3
After passing the tennis courts there, I eventually learned
that famous athletes from Argentina even have ancestors
from both Germany and Russia that escaped from WWII.
But flying back from Argentina to the States was...

Well, we were going along just fine, but the plane’s
faulty jackscrew (yes, you heard me right, jackscrew)
which controls the horizontal stabilizers, forced us to land
in Rio Gallegos where we waited for hours in an otherwise
empty airport for a replacement plane to save our day(s).
I walked a lot, and we bought a Bombilla Yerba Mate
straw for a tea I’ll never consume to be our trinket from this
trip. That straw has a place in our house now, along with
those beer labels. My Eva Perón statue photograph is a front
cover for a huge collection book when Lockdown’s Over 4,
as do those Argentine roads for The Paths Less Traveled5
for when you see those unique roads, please, take them.
