Why the White Cliffs of Dover
                             Are So White

Janet Kuypers
4/24/24

Getting ready to leave for our northern European tour,
I told my mom our first stop after landing at Heathrow
was visiting the White Cliffs of Dover.

Now, I knew nothing of what a landmark this location was,
made from coccoliths of plankton after this part of Britain
was submerged in such shallow seas 70 million years ago...

So, my mom, bless her heart, tells me she heard that
the reason why the White Cliffs of Dover are so white
is because of all the bird droppings that fall on these cliffs.

I know it’s not true, but thanks, Mom, for making me laugh
at some of the most inopportune times — because sometimes,
somehow, you have just the right thing to say. You’re the best.
