Jupiter Revealing Neptune

Janet Kuypers
12/28/19, the 1612 date
Galileo first found Neptune

When I need to reconnect to the Universe
I wear my earrings of a suspended silver ball
surrounded by a thin vertical silver ring

When I’m told my earrings look like Saturn
I need to correct them; the rings are going
the wrong way, they’re perpendicular, like

Neptune

When I search for it in the night sky, I know
my search would be to no avail; this deep
blue planet is never visible to the naked eye

When my mind wanders, curiosity piqued
about the altered orbit and horizontal spin
of the rings around Neptune blue as diamonds

when catching the light of the sun, I then
wrap my head around Galileo discovering this
moving “star” when the planet happened near

Jupiter

When he wrote his notes, despite the mounting
evidence, he never claimed this planetary discovery —
possibly from fear of reprisal from the Church

When looking back on his notes, you know
he knew, which makes me wrap my head around
the history of religion rejecting the knowledge of

science
