Knowing a Mastery of Poetry

12/12/19, on the anniversary of the 1889 death
of British Poet Robert Browning (b 7 May 1812)
Knowing a mastery of dramatic monologues,
with irony, dark humour, and social commentary
makes me forget that years ago my father
gave my mother a gold pendant inscribed
with Robert Browning’s poignant poetic words
Come dear
grow old with me
the best is
yet to be
I never thought of my father as a poetic man;
but now I think of his sardonic, sarcastic lines
and can only relay dramatic dark commentary —
I see the irony, and how only now it all seems
to so poetically tie the past to what we will be
